Description Of Job WHAT YOU WILL DOL This attorney is part of a two person specialized team within the Special Prosecutions Unit of the Criminal Justice Section that advises and assists local district attorneys and investigators in the investigation and prosecution of complex, multi-jurisdictional felony offenses, focusing on significant auto theft matters and associated crimes related to organized crime and/or gang activity. This attorney is expected to serve as a legal advisor to multi-jurisdictional auto theft task forces and proactively work with law enforcement and other prosecutors across Colorado as these cases are identified and comprehensively investigated, including using the Statewide Grand Jury to further the investigations. Litigation may include pre-trial motions work, discovery, voir dire, trial, post-trial and appellate proceedings involving major violent crimes. Overnight travel within the State of Colorado is possible and will be required. All prosecutions in which the team participates involve extensive legal research and pre-trial motions work, much of which is performed by the team attorney assigned to the case. The attorney must possess superb analytical abilities and the proven writing skills necessary to provide superior support in motions practice. In addition, the attorney must possess strong and proven litigation skills, which enable the attorney to consult and/or participate in all aspects of the prosecution, including discovery, hearings and all phases of the prosecution of a complex felony offense. This expertise includes being able to master the unique issues involved in conducting voir dire, trial, and managing the jury instructions. In addition to litigation skills, effective and ongoing communication with local prosecutors and local law enforcement is essential. This attorney will participate in the training of prosecutors and law enforcement throughout the state on issues related to best practices in litigating major auto theft related crimes and prosecutions and to also provide consultative, research and drafting assistance regarding significant legal issues and legislation. Furthermore, this attorney shall be required to take a leadership role with preparation of the annual Grant Application and monthly reporting processes that are part of the state funded and regulated Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority (CATPA). Grant approval of the Attorney General’s Auto Theft Prosecution Initiative is currently valid through fiscal year 2028, which ends on June 30, 2028. Since the inception of the AG’s participation as a recipient of the grant funding from the State of Colorado, beginning over 14 years ago, the AG’s office has always been approved by the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority to fund the prosecutor position. Position may be extended if additional funding is received. This recruitment may be used to fill multiple Assistant Attorneys General positions with the Criminal Justice section. Salary Note The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed, salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Attorneys with less than 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney will be hired as an Assistant Attorney General I (AAG I). The salary range for an AAG I is $8 8 , 197 -$ 96,554 / annually. Attorneys with more than 3 years of experience practicing as an attorney will be hired as an Assistant Attorney General II (AAG II). The AAG II salary range is $ 102,099 - $13 6,558 / annually. Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions Of Employment & Appeal Rights WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Qualified applicants must be licensed to practice law in Colorado or be clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment. Candidates should have at least 3 years of prosecution trial experience, including felony experience in Colorado State District Court. While prior experience as a prosecutor is required, private practice or other prosecution experience may be considered and, depending upon the nature of such experience, may substitute for a portion of the foregoing 3-year requirement. Exceptional litigation, analysis, writing, along with consultive and persuasive communication skills are required. A working knowledge of the laws of arrest, search and seizure and procedures for acquisition of evidence or determination of identity are also essential.
