Williamsburg Charter High School (WCHS) is a high-performing, public charter high school located in Brooklyn, New York. WCHS opened in August 2004 as the first Chancellor-authorized charter high school in the City of New York with a ninth-grade class of 131 students. Now in its eighteenth year of operation, WCHS has grown to serve approximately 963 students in grades nine through twelve. The school’s mission is to unite youth, families, staff, teachers, and the community in providing young people with the tools necessary to make sense of the world and prepare them to become skilled workers and literate citizens of the world. Young people will accomplish this through their participation in a rigorous and demanding liberal arts education that includes language, literature, writing, science, history, mathematics, the arts, technology, and exploration in disciplines designed to teach fairness, justice, respect, and compassion for themselves and others, as well as the skills of critical thinking, communication and research.

Williamsburg Charter High School provides a broad liberal arts academic program to the high-school-age youth of north Brooklyn. School programs are individualized to connect to each student’s particular level of development, including English Language Learners and students with Special Education Services. Further, WCHS provides supportive relationships with faculty, extended instructional periods, and opportunities after-school and on Saturdays for additional academic support. Social and emotional support is also available to students to ensure their non-academic needs are addressed. Students are accepted to WCHS through a random lottery with no minimum requirements, tests, or auditions required to gain entrance, and, as a public charter school, there is no tuition.

Salary:
$63,000 to $90,000

Position Description

The English/Reading Teacher acts as a resource person to promote student and teacher growth in learning and teaching reading and as a reading instructor for students in need of acceleration, correction, or remediation. The Reading Specialist works collaboratively with teachers to implement a quality literacy program that is research-based and differentiated for student needs. This position supports teachers by modeling instructional strategies and lessons, and developing and modifying lesson plans. They will support all students in a variety of ways to improve their reading and expand teacher and parent understanding of current literacy research and knowledge. This position is responsible for the design, implementation, and analysis of reading assessments and for the facilitation of the school-wide literacy plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

•  Screens students to establish proper reading level placement.

•  Assists classroom teachers in the selection of students needing special reading instruction.

•  Shares student growth data with students, families, and other key stakeholders.

•  Provides diagnostic, prescriptive, and evaluative services for identified students.

•  Provides individual and small group instruction for identified students through pull-out or

•  Assists with the administration of state reading tests.

•  Assists with the administration of interim and final exams, specifically related to special education students with read-aloud accommodations

•  Confers with the principal on the needs of the reading program.

•  Acts as a resource teacher in reading to regular classroom teachers by assisting

•  Gives demonstration lessons in the teaching of reading as requested or required.

•  Assists in the establishment and development of school and district reading curricula.

•  Provides reading resources for teachers, aides, and parents.

• Other duties as assigned.

•  Oversees the Title I reading intervention program at the school which includes overseeing curriculum development.

•  Teaches reading and literacy skills using the course of study adopted New York State

•  Facilitates literacy development across the school and content areas by serving as the literacy specialist within WCHS.

•  Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to effective learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of the students.

•  Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.

•  Evaluates student academic and behavioral progress keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.

•  Diagnoses students’ needs on a regular basis and cooperates with the other professional staff members at the school and district level in helping students develop literacy skills.

• Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss the student's academic and behavioral progress by interpreting the school programs.

•  Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized/small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil. 

• Guides planning and instructional needs along with the Assistant Principal of Instruction and Department Leaders.

• Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.

• Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

•  Assists in the selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.

•  Maintains accurate up-to-date records for all students and teachers which may be used for Title 1 submission.

•  Cooperates with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals and methods.

•  Attends and participates in faculty meetings and district Title I reading specialists meetings and professional development.
